Tuesday marks country music legend Willie Nelson’s birthday — or at least one of them.
If you ask the outlaw country icon himself, he’ll tell you he’s turning 92 on April 29. But according to official records, his birthday is actually April 30. So what gives?
Nelson explained the story himself back in 2018 on a SiriusXM radio show:
“I was born before midnight on the 29th, but it didn’t get registered in the county courthouse until the next day, the 30th,” he said. “So, it went out officially as the 30th. So I just do both days.”
For years, Nelson celebrated on April 29 — up until he joined the Air Force at age 18 and received a copy of his birth certificate. From then on, the party shifted to April 30. But he still gives a nod to both dates.
It was his cousin Mildred who confirmed he was definitely born on the 29th. She was 13 at the time and even helped name him. His middle name, Hugh, was a tribute to Mildred’s brother, who had passed away not long before.
Born and raised in Abbott, Texas, Nelson had a tough childhood. His mother left shortly after he was born, and his father remarried and moved away. Willie and his older sister Bobbie were raised by their grandparents. Bobbie, who played piano alongside him for decades, passed away in 2022 at the age of 91.
So whether you celebrate Willie’s birthday on April 29 or April 30 — or both — one thing’s for sure: he’s a living legend, and it’s worth celebrating twice.
