Sen. John Fetterman Faces Scrutiny Over Health, Staff Tensions, and Political Stances
Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman is back in the headlines — but this time, it’s not for his work on Capitol Hill. A new report has raised questions about tensions within his inner circle, concerns about his health, and his recent political positions, particularly regarding Israel.
According to a lengthy feature in New York Magazine’s Intelligencer, titled “All By Himself,” both current and former staffers say the Fetterman they see today is not the man they once knew. The piece touches on sensitive personal and professional issues — including alleged disagreements with his wife, Gisele, about his health routines, her relationship with staff, and his shifting political tone.
Health Concerns Resurface
Fetterman suffered a major stroke in May 2022 while campaigning for Senate against Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz. While he returned to the campaign trail and later to the Senate, lingering health concerns have followed him ever since.
One incident in February 2023, during a Democratic retreat at the Library of Congress, stood out to staffers. A concerned aide reportedly received a message asking about Fetterman’s well-being after seeing him sitting alone, quietly drinking a soda. Later that same day, Fetterman was nearly hit by a car and appeared to be “wandering” on Capitol Hill, according to the report.
Doctors eventually ruled out a second stroke, diagnosing Fetterman with severe dehydration. But the scare led to further scrutiny. Later that month, during a conversation with Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Fetterman appeared so disengaged he was described as nearly “catatonic.” On February 15, he checked into Walter Reed Medical Center for treatment related to clinical depression.
Back in the Arena — and Breaking Ranks
After several weeks of inpatient treatment, Fetterman returned to the Senate, seemingly reenergized and more outspoken than ever. He has since taken bold stances that have sometimes put him at odds with members of his own party, particularly over the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Sources say Fetterman’s more confrontational tone — once unexpected from the progressive lawmaker — has created friction behind the scenes. The article also suggests that personal tensions, including those involving his wife’s reported influence over his decisions and relationships with staff, have added to the strain.
While Fetterman insists he is mentally and physically capable of performing his duties, the Intelligencer report has sparked debate over how transparent public officials should be when it comes to their health — and how internal conflicts might affect their performance.
The Bigger Picture
This isn’t the first time Fetterman’s health and public persona have become political talking points. His unique style and approach have earned him both passionate supporters and vocal critics. But as speculation mounts over what’s really happening behind closed doors, Fetterman faces growing pressure to address these concerns head-on.
