Passerby Who Killed Man Attacking Cop Learns His Fate

A Florida man who fatally shot an assailant attacking a sheriff’s deputy on the side of the highway will not face criminal charges, according to a decision by the State Attorney’s Office.

Ashad Russell, 35, was officially cleared after an investigation determined he acted in defense of the officer’s life. The incident occurred on Interstate 75 in Lee County when Russell witnessed 53-year-old Edward Strother violently assaulting Deputy First Class Dean Bardes of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Strother had reportedly been pulled over for speeding. Following the traffic stop, he allegedly attacked Deputy Bardes, striking him repeatedly and pinning him to the ground.

Russell, who held a valid concealed carry permit, stopped his vehicle and approached the scene with his firearm. According to investigators, Bardes, recognizing that Russell was armed, urgently instructed him to use his weapon.

Despite repeated verbal commands for Strother to release the deputy, Russell ultimately shot Strother three times in the neck, killing him.

Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott later posted a statement on Facebook supporting Russell’s actions, citing the findings of the State Attorney’s Office, which concluded that the use of deadly force was legally justified under Florida law. The investigation determined that Russell acted to prevent serious harm or death to the deputy and to stop an imminent violent felony.

“Our review of the case is complete, and no further action will be taken,” the office said in its official statement.

However, the case was not without controversy. The Washington Post reported that Strother’s brother, Louis Strother, publicly disagreed with the outcome. While acknowledging that his brother made a serious mistake by attacking the deputy, he questioned whether lethal force was truly necessary.

The incident sparked a broader debate over the use of deadly force by civilians—particularly in defense of law enforcement officers. Supporters viewed Russell as a hero who made a life-saving decision in a split-second. Critics, however, raised concerns about whether non-lethal alternatives could have been pursued.

Russell’s attorney, Spencer Cordell, said his client was relieved to have the investigation behind him and thankful for the support he received from the community.

This case underscores both the dangers faced daily by law enforcement and the potential role of armed citizens in responding to violent threats. It also highlights the complex legal and ethical questions surrounding the use of deadly force in high-stakes situations.

Though opinions remain divided, the decision not to file charges confirms that Russell’s actions were deemed lawful. His intervention not only saved a deputy’s life but also set a precedent for how similar cases may be judged in the future.

As the case closes, Russell’s quick decision and courage continue to be recognized by many as an act of extraordinary bravery in defense of another’s life.
