Carrie Underwood is known for her powerful voice and heartfelt songs like Love Wins—but behind the spotlight, she faced a deeply personal struggle that left her questioning everything, even her faith.
In the second episode of Mike and Carrie: God & Country, the country music star broke down in tears as she opened up about a heartbreaking chapter in her life: suffering three miscarriages before the birth of her second son, Jacob.
After welcoming her first son Isaiah—who is now five—Carrie hoped to continue growing her family. But each time she became pregnant again, the pregnancies ended in loss. By the fourth time, fear and emotional exhaustion had taken over.
“I had an honest conversation with God,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion. “I was hurt. I was a little angry. And of course, you feel guilty for being mad at your creator.”
It was a moment of raw vulnerability—one where pain, confusion, and faith collided.
Carrie described reaching a breaking point. The hope she once clung to had become a heavy burden. “I told Him, ‘We need something. Either we’re going to have a baby, or we’re not. Because I can’t keep going down this road anymore.’”
Thankfully, her fears proved unfounded. Carrie carried that fourth pregnancy to term and gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Jacob, in January 2019.
Looking back, she now sees that chapter as one of deep spiritual testing and growth. While the heartbreak still lingers, Carrie’s openness offers comfort and solidarity to others quietly carrying their own grief.
Her story is a reminder: faith isn’t about always having the right words or emotions. Sometimes, it’s about being honest—even when you’re hurting—and finding light on the other side of sorrow.
