J.K. Rowling, the British author behind the iconic Harry Potter series, has become one of the most prominent figures in the U.K. opposing transgender rights. She argues that recognizing trans women as women threatens what she calls “sex-based rights” and undermines protections for cisgender women.

Rowling recently sparked further controversy by publicly accusing Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khelif of being male—a claim that contributed to a cyber harassment lawsuit in which Rowling is now named as a defendant.

Many of the Harry Potter film stars, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, have distanced themselves from Rowling’s views and publicly expressed support for the transgender community.

Doubling down on her position, Rowling has announced plans to dedicate a portion of her wealth to a privately funded foundation aimed at supporting legal efforts focused on what she terms “women’s rights.” She has pledged future royalty income to fund lawsuits and advocacy by groups such as For Women Scotland, which opposes policies that include transgender women in female-only spaces.

While facing widespread backlash and criticism, Rowling has remained unwavering in her views, continuing to use her platform and financial power to influence the debate over gender identity in the U.K. and beyond.
