Actor Colin Farrell has shared the emotional reason behind his decision to place his 21-year-old son James, who has severe disabilities, in a long-term care facility. Farrell and his ex-partner Kim Bordenave want James to have a safe, happy life with support—while they’re still alive to choose what’s best for him.
Colin explained, “What if something happened to both of us tomorrow? We want to make sure James is somewhere he belongs, where he feels connected and cared for.”
James was initially misdiagnosed with cerebral palsy, but was later found to have Angelman syndrome—a rare genetic condition that causes intellectual and physical disabilities. One telltale sign: frequent bouts of laughter. Colin recalled asking the doctor, “What’s the life expectancy?” and was relieved to hear it was normal and not painful.
Over the years, Colin has dealt with seizures, hospital visits, and adjusting medications. He vividly remembers giving James emergency medication during a seizure and watching his son fight through setbacks.
Despite the challenges, Colin beams with pride. James is nonverbal, still needs help with daily tasks, and has a live-in caregiver, but every milestone is celebrated—like feeding himself at 19 or taking his first steps at age four. “He has worked so hard his whole life,” Colin said. “He’s magic.”
The Oscar-nominated actor recently launched the Colin Farrell Foundation to support others with intellectual disabilities. Speaking publicly about James, Colin added, “He’s changed my life. I don’t want to downplay the hardship—but it’s important other parents know they’re not alone.”
James, he says, is the reason he got sober—and the heart of his world.
