It’s devastating how cruel some people can be to animals. In April 2021, a sweet and gentle dog named Buddy was the victim of a horrific act of cruelty when a young child intentionally set him on fire. The attack left Buddy with severe burns on his face and an extension cord tied around his neck. Because the child was under 12 years old, he could not be charged with a crime under Mississippi law.
After the incident, Buddy was taken in by the Tunica Humane Society and received intensive medical care at Mississippi State University’s veterinary hospital. His recovery was long and challenging, but his progress was nothing short of extraordinary. Despite the trauma, Buddy’s eyesight was saved, and after months of treatments and skin grafts, he was finally able to open his eyes on his own—without needing sedation.
Throughout his recovery, Buddy’s spirit remained unbroken. He grew more playful and affectionate with time, becoming a favorite among his caregivers. Although he still needs ongoing care—such as sunscreen and regular eye drops—his future is bright.
The Tunica Humane Society has called Buddy’s recovery a miracle. His strength and resilience continue to inspire everyone who hears his story.
