An Air India flight headed for the U.K. crashed shortly after takeoff on Thursday, June 12, near Ahmedabad Airport in western India, according to airline officials and local authorities. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew.

The flight, AI171, had departed Ahmedabad at 1:38 p.m. local time, en route to London Gatwick Airport. On board were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese citizens, Air India confirmed in a statement posted on social media.

The plane went down in the Meghaninagar area, just outside the airport perimeter, shortly after takeoff. Eyewitnesses and officials reported heavy black smoke rising from the crash site.

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation said the aircraft “fell to the ground” outside the airport limits. Firefighters and emergency response teams were dispatched immediately. India’s Civil Aviation Minister said he had ordered all aviation and rescue agencies to take swift and coordinated action to provide medical and emergency support.

The flight was scheduled to depart at 9:50 a.m. and arrive in London at 6:25 p.m. local time, according to flight tracking service FlightRadar24.

Air India stated it is still investigating the incident and gathering further information. The captain of the flight had 8,200 hours of flying experience, and the co-pilot had logged 1,100 hours, according to aviation authorities.
