A heartbreaking tragedy struck early Tuesday, July 5, in Oaxaca’s Mixteca region when a passenger bus plunged off a ravine near Magdalena Peñasco. The crash claimed 27 lives and left 17 more injured, according to state officials.

The 2002 Jaguar bus had departed from Santiago Yosondúa, headed for Mexico City, when the driver lost control near a curve. The bus fell to a riverbank behind the local church, trapping many passengers beneath the wreckage.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, pulling survivors from the debris and transporting the injured to a nearby hospital in Tlaxiaco. The recovery of victims is ongoing, with some still awaiting identification. Heavy machinery is being used to lift the destroyed bus.

The crash has left the region in shock. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause.
