“Not a mouse, not a frog—just an unknown little creature,” read the caption from Heart of the Forest Wildlife Rescue, alongside photos of a tiny, mysterious newborn covered in soft black fur.
She had been gently carried in by a dog who found her, and soon after, her photo was posted online. That’s when the internet exploded with guesses.
Was she a kitten? A squirrel? Maybe a rabbit or a baby ferret? Some people even joked she looked like a miniature bear—or something from another planet.
Rescuers revealed that the tiny animal was a female, only 3 or 4 days old, and had already suffered some minor injuries. Even the experienced team wasn’t quite sure what she was at first.
To help solve the mystery, they posted a quick animal ID tip: baby hares are born fully furred with open eyes, while newborn rabbits are typically born hairless and blind. That clue helped narrow things down.
Whatever species she turned out to be, one thing was certain—this little one was incredibly lucky. Thanks to a gentle dog and the dedicated team at the rescue center, she now has a safe place to heal and grow, and a second shot at life.
