Four-year-old Maverick Flinn, a cheerful boy with a big love for toy tractors and farm life, tragically lost his life in a farming accident on June 23 in southern Indiana. The heartbreaking incident also claimed the life of his great-grandmother, 68-year-old Nancy Ann “Nanny” Fox.
Maverick had simply wanted to ride along in the combine with his great-grandfather. But after getting off the equipment, a tragic tractor mishap ended both his and his great-grandmother’s lives—shattering their close-knit family.
In the days following the accident, the small town of Seymour rallied around the Flinn family. Neighbors came together and harvested two weeks’ worth of wheat in just one day, while a GoFundMe campaign for a memorial playground in Maverick’s name quickly raised over $70,000.
Maverick is being remembered as a bright, kind-hearted little boy who loved the outdoors, racing monster trucks, visiting the fire station with his dad, and bringing joy wherever he went.
His great-grandmother, Nancy, was known as the heart of the family—a loving wife and devoted farm matriarch who found peace in the fields and on the front porch surrounded by those she loved.
The Flinns, a family rooted in public service—both Maverick’s father and grandfather are firefighters—have launched an initiative called the “Maverick Minute.” It encourages farmers to take 60 seconds to pause and reflect before using equipment, in hopes of preventing similar tragedies.
“We’re going to continue on in his honor,” Maverick’s uncle said. “And we’re going to do everything we can to make sure something like this never happens again.”
