A family enjoying a day at the beach near Burry Port, Carmarthenshire, unknowingly posed next to a 70-year-old World War II mine—mistaking it for a barnacle-covered buoy.
Five days later, Carmarthenshire Council rangers identified the object as an unexploded bomb and immediately closed the beach. A bomb squad safely carried out a controlled detonation.
During their visit, the family had even joked it looked like a “big bomb.” Ms. Gravell, the mother, said they were stunned to learn the truth and would be far more cautious on future trips.
Councillor Meryl Gravell apologized for the disruption and stressed that all necessary safety measures had been taken. The incident is a powerful reminder to treat unknown objects—especially in coastal areas—with caution.
