On July 7, 2025, tragedy struck near Raleigh Executive Jetport when a small plane crashed just one mile from landing. On board were Travis and Candace Buchanan, both 35, and their two young children. The family was returning home to Sanford after a beach trip to Florida.
Before the crash, the pilot reported engine and navigation issues. Investigators are now examining the wreckage and reviewing flight records to understand what went wrong.
The Buchanans were deeply loved in their community, known for their family-run produce farm and generous spirit. Teachers, neighbors, and friends poured out tributes, remembering the warmth and joy the family brought to those around them.
“They were building something special, not just for themselves—but for everyone,” shared a local business owner.
Ohio Crash Days Earlier
Just over a week earlier, on June 29, another crash claimed six lives in Ohio when a Cessna 441 went down shortly after takeoff. The victims included members of the Weller family—respected business owners and motorsports enthusiasts—and their pilot and co-pilot.
James Weller Jr., president of Liberty Steel Industries and a beloved racer at Sharon Speedway, died alongside his wife, children, and crew. The crash left a deep void in both the business and racing communities.
Both incidents are under investigation by the NTSB. As loved ones mourn, communities across state lines are left honoring the legacies of two families gone too soon.
