In early 2012, Diane Aulger faced both the joy of new life and the heartbreak of impending loss. Her husband Mark, 52, had just survived colon cancer surgery, but chemotherapy had left his lungs irreparably damaged. Doctors told the family he had only days to live.
Diane was nine months pregnant with their fifth child when they got the news. Determined to give her husband one last beautiful moment, she made an unimaginable choice: to induce labor early so Mark could meet their baby girl.
On January 18, Diane gave birth to Savannah. A hospital bed was pulled beside Mark’s, and for 45 quiet minutes, he held his daughter in his arms. The couple cried together, knowing time was short.
Three days later, Mark slipped into a coma. Diane placed Savannah on his chest, and even then, his hand would move toward her—an unconscious gesture of love. He passed away on January 23, surrounded by his family.
Today, Diane and their children keep Mark’s memory alive, remembering the man who made them laugh and who, even at the end, gave everything for his family.
