A devastating accident during a rally event in Paparoa, New Zealand, claimed the lives of rising star Brooklyn Horan and his co-driver, Tyson. According to investigators, their car veered off a gravel road and plunged into a flooded river. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
MotorSport New Zealand confirmed that 15-year-old Horan was behind the wheel during the crash, which took place on a closed road approved for the rally. Though the cause remains under investigation, officials stated the road did not appear unsafe.
Horan, part of MotorSport NZ’s junior driver program that allows competitors as young as 12, was seen as one of the sport’s most promising young talents. The rally community is mourning the loss, with tributes pouring in from fans, friends, and fellow racers.
“Brooklyn was a natural talent and an incredible kid,” wrote Hodgson Motorsport. “He died doing what he loved.”
WRC driver Hayden Paddon shared, “Two great people taken too soon. Tyson was a huge rally fan and Brooklyn was destined for greatness.”
Tragically, Tyson leaves behind a pregnant wife, Lucy. A fundraiser has been launched to support her and their unborn child in the wake of the loss.
MotorSport New Zealand has promised a full investigation and extended support to all those affected. President Wayne Christie summed up the grief felt across the sport: “This tragedy has shaken the entire motorsport community.”
