Nicole Hallson is a proud mom raising two kids, Asher and Winry. But she’s also on a mission—to show the world that our differences are what make us perfect.
When baby Winry was born in February 2021, Nicole was shocked. Winry had a rare birthmark, later identified as congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN), covering a fourth of her face. Nicole had a healthy pregnancy and wasn’t expecting anything out of the ordinary. At first, she thought it was a bruise. But soon realized it was something more unique.
Though she felt worry at first, Nicole quickly shifted her focus to love and learning. “I just held her tight and loved on her,” she wrote on her blog.
CMN is rare and can appear as dark patches anywhere on the body. And while Winry’s condition carries some medical concerns—like a slightly increased risk of skin cancer—her parents are more focused on shielding her from potential bullying. “Her health and happiness are our top priorities,” Nicole told Good Morning America.
Now, Nicole shares Winry’s story online to raise awareness and spread acceptance. “This is a good conversation starter,” she said. “It’s important for kids to see that differences are normal.”
As for Winry? She’s a joyful, talkative, sassy toddler who brightens every room she enters. “She radiates joy,” Nicole says.
And she truly does.
