CLEVELAND — A sentencing hearing took a dramatic turn Thursday when Van Terry, the father of one of serial killer Michael Madison’s victims, leapt over a courtroom table in an attempt to attack the convicted murderer.
Just moments earlier, a judge had sentenced Madison to death for the killing of three women, including Terry’s daughter, Shirellda Terry.
Visibly emotional, Terry approached the podium to deliver a statement. “Right now, I guess we’re supposed to, in our hearts, forgive this clown who has touched our families, taken my child,” he said.
As he finished, Terry turned toward Madison, who was seated behind the defense table. Overcome with grief and anger, he suddenly rushed forward and lunged over the table at the killer.
Courtroom officers quickly intervened and restrained Terry. No serious injuries were reported.
The emotional outburst captured the raw pain felt by families affected by Madison’s crimes—reminding everyone of the deep scars left behind by unimaginable loss.
