9-Year-Old Girl Drowns at Hersheypark — Community Mourns

A family trip to Hersheypark turned heartbreaking when 9-year-old Sophia Subedi of Harrisburg tragically drowned in the Boardwalk wave pool on July 24. Despite quick action from lifeguards and emergency responders, Sophia could not be revived. The coroner confirmed her death was due to accidental drowning.

Sophia, a joyful third-grader known for her love of reading, music, and helping others, was deeply loved in Harrisburg’s Bhutanese community. A touching tribute described her as a bright light whose loss is devastating.

Hersheypark expressed deep sorrow, with CEO John Lawn stating that lifeguards acted immediately and that safety remains the park’s top priority. An internal review is ongoing.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help with funeral costs. Loved ones will gather to honor Sophia at a memorial service at Jesse H. Geigle Funeral Home.
