When Angelica was born on May 6, 2018, she came into the world with a striking heart-shaped port wine stain on her face. Her mother, Marianna Bowering, saw nothing but beauty. But as Angelica grew, not everyone was so kind.
Despite receiving love and support from many, the family also faced cruel comments online. One of the most hurtful? A stranger asking if Angelica’s face had been “pushed onto a skillet.” Others called her “hideous” or “defective”—words no parent should ever hear about their child.
But Marianna, just 27 at the time, refused to let negativity define her daughter’s story. Determined to help Angelica grow up knowing she’s beautiful just as she is, Marianna found a powerful way to show it.
Inspired by Vascular Birthmark Awareness Day, Marianna painted her own face to match Angelica’s birthmark.
“I wanted to be just as beautiful as her,” she said.
Before that, Marianna would decorate Angelica’s birthmark with glitter, turning it into something that sparkled—literally and emotionally.
Though people often suggested her daughter should “just cover it up,” Marianna pushed back. Why should she have to hide? Instead, she’s teaching Angelica that her birthmark is something to celebrate, not conceal.
While port wine stains can sometimes come with health risks, Angelica has been thriving. “Thankfully, she’s totally healthy,” Marianna told TODAY, noting they simply keep up with regular check-ups, especially for her eyes due to a risk of glaucoma.
Marianna’s message to her daughter is clear: You are beautiful. You are worthy. You are loved.
And to the world, her story is a powerful reminder that real beauty has no mold—and acceptance starts at home.
