How BFF Relationships Have Changed From the ’90s to Today

In the ’90s, your best friend was your partner in crime. You’d stay up late talking on the phone, gossip about your parents, and show up to school in matching outfits like it was a full-time job.

Today, not much has changed — except now the late-night chats come with a glass of wine. Siblings might have annoyed you, but your BFF was the one you made prank calls with, cried to over crush drama, and forgave after she accidentally let your Tamagotchi die.

Back then, fights meant dramatic note-passing in class. Now, it’s passive-aggressive Instagram likes and a peace offering in the form of overpriced coffee. Friday nights once meant hanging at the mall or sneaking into R-rated movies — now it’s Netflix, wine, and deep dives into a crush’s social media.

Whether you were pretending to be a Spice Girl or perfecting a TikTok dance, the truth is the same: BFFs are forever, no matter how the times — or trends — change.
