When snow blanketed a Dutch village, one house stood out—the only roof without snow. At first, neighbors thought it was renovations or special roofing. But as storms passed and the roof stayed bare, suspicions grew.
Police knew the reason right away: indoor cannabis farms. Powerful lamps and heaters used to grow marijuana generate so much heat that snow can’t settle on the roof.
Sure enough, inside the house was a full-scale cannabis operation. Similar “snow-free roof” discoveries have led police in other Dutch cities to bust grow rooms with hundreds of plants worth tens of thousands of euros.
Authorities now urge residents to report unusual bare roofs during snowy weather, calling it “nature’s own thermal camera.”
While the Netherlands is famous for its cannabis cafés, large-scale cultivation is illegal and treated as drug trafficking.
Sometimes, the snow says more than the neighbors.
