Marian Robinson, the beloved mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, passed away peacefully Friday morning at the age of 86, her family announced.
Michelle paid tribute to her mom on social media, calling her “my rock” and remembering her as a constant source of love and steady support. Former President Barack Obama also shared his grief, describing Robinson as “one-of-a-kind” and saying the family feels lucky to have had her in their lives.
Born Marian Shields in 1937, she married Fraser Robinson III, a World War II veteran and Chicago water department worker. Together, they raised Michelle and her brother Craig in a modest home on the city’s South Side, instilling values of resilience, humility, and care for others.
Robinson later became a familiar presence at the White House during the Obama presidency, often helping care for her granddaughters, Sasha and Malia. For many, she symbolized quiet strength and unwavering devotion to family.
Her passing leaves a deep void, but her legacy of love, sacrifice, and guidance will live on through her children, grandchildren, and all who were touched by her life.
