Luna Tavares-Fenner was born in Florida with a rare birthmark covering much of her face — a dark nevus that made her stand out from the start. To her parents, Carolina and Thiago, it wasn’t a flaw but a symbol of her spirit and resilience.
Not everyone saw it that way. Carolina still remembers the cruel day someone called her baby a “monster.” Instead of breaking her, it ignited her determination to protect Luna and fight for her future.
In 2019, the family made the bold choice to seek treatment overseas. Despite doubts from others, they pressed on, fueled by love and the generosity of donors who helped make the journey possible.
Under the care of Dr. Pavel Popov, Luna went through multiple surgeries that not only reduced her risk of skin cancer but also gave her new confidence. She faced every procedure with bravery, often bringing her dolls along so the doctor could “treat” them too.
Now 6 years old, Luna has undergone more than a dozen surgeries. Though scars remain and her journey isn’t over, she continues to inspire with her strength. With just two surgeries left, her parents’ mission is unchanged: to give their daughter the healthiest, happiest life possible.
Luna’s story is one of love, resilience, and the power of seeing beauty in what makes us different.
