A devastating mudslide along Highway 99 near Lillooet, B.C., has claimed at least four lives, with one person still unaccounted for.
Search crews recovered the body of a woman earlier in the week, followed by three men whose remains were found over two days. Despite tireless efforts, authorities say the dangerous conditions have forced them to end active search operations for the final missing person.
The slide, triggered by relentless rain and flooding, tore through Duffey Lake Road on November 15, leaving the highway closed indefinitely and the community reeling.
Officials are now focused on identifying victims and supporting families. “Our deepest condolences go out to those grieving these sudden losses,” said B.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe.
This tragedy adds to a difficult year for British Columbia, underscoring the growing risks posed by extreme weather events.
