A 17-year-old girl from the Philippines, Mary Ann Regacho, suddenly went blind just hours after squeezing what she thought was a simple pimple on her face.
Mary, who gave birth at just 16, initially assumed the bump on the bridge of her nose was due to hormones. But the swelling worsened, spreading across her face and eventually affecting her eyesight.
She tried various home remedies, but nothing helped. Now, she fears the damage to her face and vision could be permanent.
Mary and her husband, Albert Sales, who works sporadically as a farmhand, couldn’t afford medical treatment. A full year passed before Mary could get to a hospital—by then, the couple still didn’t have the money to pay for her care.
Out of options, Albert turned to the public, asking for donations to help cover medical expenses. He explained they’re barely making ends meet while trying to feed themselves and care for their baby.
