A Little Girl Was Bullied and Called a “Monster” Because of Her Birthmark, Now She Found Her Inner Princess

No child should ever be mocked or made to feel less-than for being different. Luna’s mom, Carolina, knew that all too well. When strangers started making cruel comments about her daughter’s appearance, it lit a fire in her to protect Luna and give her the joyful life she deserved.

Luna was born in Florida with a large birthmark, a congenital melanocytic nevus, that covered much of her face—around her eyes, nose, cheeks, and forehead—shaped almost like Batman’s mask. From the moment Carolina and her husband, Thiago Tavares, saw her, they were filled with love. But they also knew they were about to face a unique and challenging journey.

One of the hardest moments for Carolina came when a stranger called Luna a “monster.” The pain of hearing someone say that about her child pushed her to take action. She and Thiago made Luna’s well-being their number one priority and set out to find the best medical care, even if it meant leaving the country.

In 2019, despite criticism and doubt from others, they traveled abroad to seek treatment. The couple worked tirelessly to raise money, helped along the way by generous donations from their community and kind strangers. Doctors confirmed that Luna had congenital melanocytic nevus, and after six surgeries, much of the birthmark was removed—greatly reducing her risk of developing skin cancer.

Through it all, Luna stayed cheerful and brave, winning over doctors and caregivers with her spirit. Today, she lights up every room she enters with her big smile and bright personality.

On Easter Sunday in 2023, Luna was all smiles as she posed happily with her parents—beaming with joy, surrounded by love, and soaking in every moment of their magical family celebration. Carolina and Thiago continue to shower her with support, making sure she knows just how loved and special she is.

Thanks to their unwavering love and commitment, Luna’s future is full of promise—and she’s not alone. Just like Luna, little Nicole is growing up embracing his own birthmark, thanks to a mom who turned it into a symbol of pride and positivity.
