Ahmonique Miller, a 28-year-old woman from Las Vegas, died just two days after traveling to Miami for cosmetic surgery, according to multiple reports.
Miller and her sister, Kiera Barnes, flew to Florida on March 5 with plans to undergo procedures together at Avana Plastic Surgery. Miller had a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) and liposuction on March 7. That same night, she was found unresponsive at a post-surgery recovery house called Keyla’s Recovery House, which was later identified as an unlicensed facility.
Barnes told investigators she woke up to find her sister “cold and still in the same position as when they fell asleep.”
According to a Miami Police report reviewed by PEOPLE, Miller had been resting since early afternoon. When staff realized she hadn’t woken up by 9:30 p.m., they checked on her and called 911. First responders arrived to find her face down, heavily bandaged, and already showing signs of rigor mortis. She was pronounced dead at 10:26 p.m.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner later confirmed the cause of death as acute combined drug toxicity. Miller had both oxycodone, a prescription opioid, and bromazolam, a powerful, illegal sedative often found in counterfeit pills, in her system.
The medical examiner’s report stated that using these substances after surgery interfered with her breathing and significantly increased the risk of death while sleeping.
The facility’s owner, Keyla Oliver, told police she gave Miller two Percocet pills, despite not having a medical license. Barnes added that Oliver also gave Miller muscle relaxers from her own prescription and more pills from an unlabeled bottle, saying her sister’s prescribed medications weren’t ready.
Miller is survived by her 1-year-old daughter.
In a heartbreaking statement to NBC 6 South Florida, Miller’s mother said:
“My daughter was supposed to be here with her daughter — and she’s not. I have to remind myself every day that this is real… Ahmonique is not coming back.”
She added,
“I never thought I’d be writing an obituary for my child. She was smart, beautiful — just a huge loss.”
PEOPLE reached out to Keyla’s Recovery House and the Medical Examiner’s office for comment but has not received a response.
