A devastating mudslide near Lillooet, British Columbia, has claimed the lives of four people, with one person still unaccounted for.
Triggered by days of relentless rain and flooding, the slide hit Highway 99—known locally as Duffey Lake Road—on November 15. Search-and-rescue crews worked tirelessly in dangerous conditions, recovering the body of a woman earlier in the week, followed by three men over the next two days. One individual remains missing.
Despite determined efforts, search operations were called off due to worsening weather and unstable terrain.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said B.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe. “Our thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones and with the one family still waiting for answers.”
Authorities are working to identify the victims and notify families, while the highway remains closed indefinitely.
This disaster highlights not just the personal loss but also the growing toll of extreme weather in British Columbia—a stark reminder of the need for greater climate resilience and community preparedness.
