On a hot day in Keene, New Hampshire, Officer Jason Short rushed to a Walmart parking lot after reports of a baby left in a locked car. Seeing tiny feet under a blanket, he smashed the window to save the child and began CPR — only to discover it wasn’t a baby at all, but a lifelike doll.
The doll belonged to Carolynne Seiffer, who collects realistic “reborn” dolls to cope with the loss of her son. Though initially embarrassed, Officer Short had no regrets. “I would always assume it’s a child,” he said.
The police department covered the cost of the broken window, and no charges were filed. The incident, though startling, was a powerful reminder: when in doubt, it’s better to act.
