What should have been one of the happiest days of Reazjhana Williams’ life became a heartbreaking ordeal when she arrived at a Denver hospital in June 2021 to give birth. Excited to welcome her baby girl naturally, everything changed when doctors couldn’t find the baby’s heartbeat, triggering an emergency C-section.
Moments after being rushed into surgery, Reazjhana gave birth to her daughter, Kyanni—but instead of being placed on her mother’s chest, the newborn was whisked away, bearing a deep, shocking laceration across her face. The cut, which stretched from her cheek toward her ear, required immediate plastic surgery and 13 stitches.
“I tried to be understanding,” Reazjhana told KDVR. “But there’s just a lot I can’t make sense of.”
Doctors later explained that Kyanni’s head had been unusually close to the uterine wall, possibly leading to the accidental injury during the emergency procedure. Still, the pain was immense—not only physically for Kyanni, but emotionally for her family.
Kyanni’s father, Damarqus, spoke about the helplessness of watching their newborn suffer: “It’s upsetting. She’s not comfortable. This wasn’t what we expected at all.”
Denver Health acknowledged the incident, calling it a known but rare complication of emergency C-sections. Still, the trauma lingers.
A GoFundMe page launched for the family has raised over $11,000 to support Kyanni’s ongoing care and recovery. Despite the scar, her parents remain hopeful — that over time, her wound will heal, but her story of resilience will remain.
