After more than two decades, the mystery of Samantha Jean Hopper and her young daughter, Courtney Holt, has been solved. The two went missing in Arkansas in 1998, along with Samantha’s blue Ford Tempo.
This week, the nonprofit Adventures With Purpose located the car submerged in eight feet of water. Inside were human remains, now being sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for DNA testing.
Samantha, who was nine months pregnant at the time, had been on her way to pick up Courtney before attending a show. Her surviving daughter, Dezarea, was just two years old when her mother and sister vanished. She called the discovery “relieving,” bringing long-awaited closure to their family.
The Pope County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the family and gratitude to those who helped solve the 23-year-old case. Adventures With Purpose said Samantha and Courtney are now “back at home.”
