After sitting on a bench, they noticed a strange little creature completely covered in fur

At Gwinnett County Park, Leslie Howe spotted a strange, furry little creature while out with her baby and two other children. The kids were curious and wanted to touch it, but something in Leslie’s gut told her to stop them.

That instinct may have saved them from a world of pain. The “cute” creature was actually a pus caterpillar—the most venomous caterpillar in the U.S. Hidden beneath its soft fur are venomous spines that can cause excruciating pain, severe nausea, and heavy sweating. Even a light touch can trigger the sting.

Reports from Florida to North Carolina have documented children being injured after petting these caterpillars—or having them fall from trees. Experts warn: if you see one, don’t touch it, and keep kids away.

Leslie’s quick decision turned what could have been a dangerous day into just another sunny outing—and now she’s sharing her story so others can stay safe.
