Paul and Rebecca Callaghan’s daughter, Matilda Rose, was born with serious health challenges. Premature and unexpectedly ill, she arrived with dark marks on her face that weren’t bruises but signs of Sturge-Weber Syndrome and Trachea Oesophageal Fistula (TOF). These conditions mean she may face seizures, glaucoma, weakness, and learning difficulties.
From her first days, Matilda has undergone surgeries and frequent laser treatments to manage her birthmarks, leaving temporary polka-dot marks across her face. Out in public, strangers sometimes misjudge her appearance, assuming abuse, which breaks her parents’ hearts.
Despite the challenges—difficulty walking and communicating—Matilda’s parents remain devoted to giving her a joyful life. Her father says, “I wish people could see past the birthmarks and see what a wonderful little angel she is.”
Sharing their story, the Callaghans hope to raise awareness and remind the world that Matilda’s courage, joy, and spirit shine far brighter than any mark on her skin.
